A little local history, the BDL has gone through some rough spots in the last few years. Long story short, it was purchased by an owner who had little respect for the historical value and the place the BDL has in the heart of the SLV and California history. The  mountain community quickly let their displeasure be known. ;) Luckily, the new owner understands this, and is doing his best to restore her to her former glory. One of his best moves was tracking down Pedro Perez, who ran the original BDL Diner over 20 years ago, for those of you with a long memory. Let me tell you the food and service have gotten even better. This is a beautiful family run establishment. Pedro and his family are lovely. It deserves support in these trying times. They serve fresh homestyle diner faire with California flair. Heavenly chicken fried steak, huevos rancheros, waffles, pancakes, crepes, French toast, eggs bene, burgers, hot and cold sandwiches, salad, ect. The hash browns are out of this world. He does this thing where he adds green onions to them, and it's just too good. Great menu. Not too much to choose from, but enough that you'll have a hard time deciding on what you want to try. They serve Santa Cruz Roasting Company Coffee and man is it good. They have an ice cream counter too, they serve Marriane's. If I have to tell you how good Marianne's is, you have been missing out my friend. Truth is, I haven't tried anything I haven't loved. The portions are spot on. The ambiance is great. Red, white, and chrome. Black and white checkered floors. Pure Americana. Indoors or out. Darling patio. If you come for the live music on the weekends, you can order from the diner and they'll bring your order to you on the other side of the hotel. Just so you can continue to enjoy the music uninterrupted. There is Wi-Fi. (If you're a local you know how awesome this is.) There is plenty of seating indoors and out. Even on a busy weekend you should be able to get a table. They are kid and pet friendly. They are just plain friendly. There's even a little smoking patio in the center of the parking lot, for those of you who enjoy a smoke after a good meal.

Had dinner and breakfast there while staying at the Lodge this past week. Wonderful hamburger and Pork chop for dinner, then breakfast next morning. Loved the "Italian Omelette" with Pesto and Mushrooms. Let us bring in our own wine without corkage fee, though you can also bring in form local bar next door. Staff very friendly.

Came in at 1:00pm and they were still serving breakfast which was awesome! Server was friendly and attentive and the food was awesome! I got the chorizo and onion scramble, it was full of flavor and quickly disappeared from my plate! My wife got the French toast which was fantastic. Highly recommend giving this place a try, especially if you’re already staying at the lodge!

This hidden gem has delicious home cooked food! Our burgers were so good and you could taste the quality and love cooked into it. We saw others near us order breakfast and it looked and smelled so good! If you’re in the area do not pass this place up!!

Nestled in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains at 11570 CA-9, Brookdale Cafe is a cherished local gem that blends authentic Americana charm with fresh, homestyle diner fare infused with a California twist. This family-run establishment exudes warmth and character, inviting you to step into a classic 1950s diner atmosphere complete with red, white, and chrome accents, black-and-white checkered floors, and a welcoming patio surrounded by towering redwoods.

Brookdale Cafe’s recent revival honors its rich local history, thanks to a new owner committed to restoring the diner’s legacy. A highlight of this renaissance is the return of Pedro Perez, who originally ran the cafe over two decades ago, bringing both nostalgia and elevated craftsmanship to every dish. The menu, while not overwhelming, offers a perfect balance of choices — from heavenly chicken fried steak, huevos rancheros, and the Italian omelette with pesto and mushrooms, to crispy, flavorful hash browns smartly topped with green onions.

The cafe’s breakfasts and dinners are consistently lauded for their heartiness and authenticity. Standout dishes like the chorizo and onion scramble burst with flavor, while the French toast is a comforting, sweet delight. Their burgers and pork chops showcase a dedication to high-quality, satisfying meals. A cup of Santa Cruz Roasting Company coffee perfectly complements the food — robust and expertly brewed every time.

Beyond the food, Brookdale Cafe creates an inviting space for all. Ample indoor and outdoor seating accommodates families, pets, and those looking to unwind on a sunny afternoon. Weekend live music pairs perfectly with the option to dine uninterrupted on the patio or even enjoy meals delivered across from the hotel. Wi-Fi access adds a practical touch, making it a well-rounded community hub.

Adding to the charm is the ice cream counter featuring Marianne’s — a sweet local treasure that guests adore. The cafe’s no-corkage policy for bringing your own wine is a thoughtful perk, encouraging guests to savor their meals at leisure, often accompanied by the nearby bar’s offerings.

Brookdale Cafe is more than just a place to eat; it’s a destination where tradition meets tender care. For anyone exploring the Santa Cruz Mountains or staying at the nearby lodge, this diner offers hearty food, rich history, and a genuine welcoming spirit that makes every visit memorable.
